Uniting coastal states: Strengthening regional voice in tuna fisheries

As the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission meeting approaches, Seychelles has taken a proactive stance by bringing together key coastal states to form a strong position on tuna fisheries.

The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) meeting which will be held from April 13-17, 2025, in La Réunion, will see discussions on the sustainable management of tuna stocks, a resource that is crucial to the economies of many IOTC member countries.

Tuna fishing is a major source of income, as well as being critical to food security. The IOTC, which manages tuna fishing in the Indian Ocean, plays an important role in ensuring that stocks are harvested sustainably, while balancing the interests of different nations. However, with 31 member states, each with their own priorities and economic interests, negotiations can be challenging.
