LDS takes part in AU program for political parties |28 August 2019
The Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) has taken part in a workshop organised by the African Union (AU) for political parties in East Africa to design a program for support to political parties.
The East Africa workshop, held on August 21-22, 2019 in Arusha, Tanzania, is being replicated in other regions of the continent and is meant to accompany the AU program for democracy support in member countries.
Party leader Roger Mancienne represented LDS at the workshop which was also attended by a representative of United Seychelles. Delegates from nine countries took part.
The workshop has listed guiding principles and priority areas for a program which will be considered by the parties in various countries according to their respective situations. The recommendations will be incorporated in an Africa-wide program which will be validated in a meeting for all countries in Africa planned for next year.
Regarding support for the parties, emphasis has been placed on capacity building, inclusion of women and minority groups, and internal democracy. For inter-party relations, the program intends to promote dialogue and consultation among parties on national priorities.
Facilitating peaceful and orderly transfer of power is one of the areas which many parties have expressed as one of the priorities.
LDS has welcomed the AU initiative for engagement with political parties which can be part of efforts to strengthen democracy, along with efforts to promote equitable conditions for political participation and free and fair elections in all member countries.
