Lieutenant Colonel Attala receives instrument of appointmentas new SCG commander

Promoted as the new commander of the Seychelles Coast Guard,Lieutenant Colonel Jean Attala received hisinstrument of appointment from President Wavel Ramkalawan,confirming him in his new post.

This was during a ceremony at State House which was attended by Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Seychelles People’s Defence Forces (SPDF) Commander-in-Chief, Colonel Michael Rosette as well as other high ranking members of the SPDFand the Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG).

Like many of his fellow officers in the SCG, Lieutenant Colonel Attala started his career as a simple soldierin the early 1990s before he then went on to serve in several positions including deputy-commander of the SCG.

“This promotion is the result of years of training and study which has now come to fruition and the SPDF has given me the responsibility to lead the SCG,” said the newly promoted commander Attala.

He continued by adding that this promotion is a high honour for him as the SCG is the biggest and most important unit in the defence forces.

Regarding the changes he is going to bring, Mr Attala said the SCG has a huge role to play when it comes to the war against drugs.

“We will reinforce the commitment we have in the fight against drugs as well as continue to protect our seafearers,” he said.

Commander Attala also added that he is putting great importance on the role of the youthin the SCG.

“It is important to integrate our young people in the SCG so that they can also help the country.”

He went on to talkabout the importance of collaborating with other countries when it comes to stopping organised crimes.

Commander Attala also noted that we need to have another coast guard base on an outer island as the surveillance of our vast exclusive economic zone is more andmore necessary as maritime crimes increase.
