When convenience becomes too convenient

There was a time when getting something done meant, quite simply, getting up and doing it. If you wanted to know something, you looked it up in a book, asked someone who might know, or simply accepted that you did not have the answer. If you wanted to speak to someone, you called them. If you wanted to buy something, you went to a shop. Getting lost meant stopping to ask for directions, and remembering a telephone number meant actually remembering it rather than scrolling through a contact list.
