Early work exit measure cuts fuel use on Mahé
By Kassey Govinden
The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has reported positive results from the government’s early work exit initiative, with reduced electricity demand on Mahé leading to significant fuel savings and helping to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on electricity production.
Speaking on the outcomes of the measure, chief executive Joel Valmont revealed that monitoring conducted over the past 20 days has shown a notable decrease in electricity demand on Mahé. “We’ve seen a reduction in the demand on Mahé, which has translated roughly to 14,000 litres of fuel every week in terms of savings,” Mr Valmont explained.
He added that if the current trend continues, the savings could become even more substantial. “When you project that to a month, it would imply around 60,000 litres of fuel. At today’s fuel price that we pay for producing electricity on Mahé, it’s reflecting a saving of around R680,000 every month.”
