The demolition of the once-iconic Reef Hotel at Anse Aux Pins is moving ahead faster than expected, bringing the decades-old chapter of the island’s tourism history closer to an end.
The project, which began two weeks ago after years of delay, had initially been scheduled to last four months, but those overseeing the work now believe it will be completed well ahead of time.
Project consultant Nimhan Senaratne of Eco-Sol Consulting Pty Ltd, told Seychelles NATION yesterday that the weak structure of the old buildings has made the work progress more quickly than anticipated.
“The demolition contract is for four months, but we firmly believe that we will be done earlier. We have already surpassed the level of demolition we had set out to achieve at this point. Even the equipment we had planned to bring in, like wrecking machinery, isn’t necessary. We are simply using a heavy hammer attached to an excavator, and it has been more than enough to break down these structures,” he said.
Mr Senaratne explained that the project is being closely monitored to meet environmental standards. Eco-Sol Consulting is working alongside the Ministry of Environment’s appointed officer, Myron Meme, to ensure compliance.
