A group of 44 students, including teachers from La Digue secondary school visited the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture on Tuesday April 22, 2025.

The objectives of the visit were to provide students with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the location of the institute, learn about the programmes on offer, and also visit the facilities available to help them in their decision-making process.

Head of programmes for general agriculture, Kerapatse Kopelo and head of horticulture and landscaping, Kiran Greedarry presented the different programmes offered by the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture (SIAH), including the entry requirements for each programme, career pathways, and others.

Guest speakers from the department of Agriculture, Dr Charles Nelson and Marie-Michelle Payet, provided an overview of the various activities carried out by the crop and livestock department. They further emphasised the different career opportunities at the department of Agriculture. General manager of Scenic Landscaping, Deepaksingh Shamah, provided an overview of the company and the different career and employment opportunities, work ethics, and other necessary information.

After the presentation, SIAH staff guided the students and teachers on a tour of the institution. They visited the hydroponics greenhouse, crop section, ornamental plants nursery, poultry unit, cattle unit, goat unit, rabbit unit, duck Unit, local chicken unit, library, computer room, boys’ and girls’ showers and changing rooms.

At the end of the tour visit, the students and teachers thanked SIAH and all guest speakers for the valuable information they provided during their preparation to help them make the right choices for their future. The management and staff of SIAH encourage initiatives that help students recognise agricultural practices and knowledge as vital for identifying their future careers.
