The Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) has taken a significant step in revitalising the Red Cross Club within schools across Seychelles.
As part of this initiative, a special induction session was held at the National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS)on Friday, March 7, 2025 for students who expressed an interest in joining the club.
The session was conducted at the NIHSS campus in Mont Fleuri, and was attended by over 40 learners.
The session's main focus was establishing a Red Cross Club within NIHSS.
Through an anonymous voting process, Rudy Flore was elected as chairperson, Beverly Quatre as vice- chairperson, Jade Faure as secretary, and Shamelaah Labrosse as treasurer.
Additionally, three ordinary members – Jada Louise, Frances Memee and Anthony – complete the committee. This committee will play a vital role in disseminating information and organising activities aligned with the RCSS’ programmes.
In her closing remarks, the new chairperson of the NIHSS Red Cross Committee, Rudy Flore, also an active RCSS volunteer, shared her experiences. She highlighted how the Red Cross Club has provided her with opportunities to engage in humanitarian work, including disaster response efforts in December 2023, community outreach programmes, and various standby duties.
Ms Flore emphasised the invaluable skills she has developed through the Red Cross and encouraged students to seize the opportunities offered by the RCSS, including specialised training, international missions, and personal development opportunities beneficial for both professional and everyday life.
Following the session, students engaged with RCSS representatives to express their interests, seek further clarifications, and complete their volunteer registration forms.
The objectives of the NIHSS Red Cross Club are to:
- Promote awareness of Red Cross principles and values among students;
- Provide opportunities for training in first aid, psychosocial support, and disaster response;
- Encourage active community involvement through volunteerism and outreach programmes;
- Support RCSS initiatives aimed at assisting vulnerable populations;
- Foster leadership and teamwork through participation in humanitarian efforts;
- Equip students with essential knowledge and skills to enhance their role as future nurses;
- Promote blood donation and active participation in RCSS blood donation programmes.
As an institution dedicated to training future healthcare professionals, NIHSS provides an ideal environment for nurturing a spirit of humanitarian service. The establishment of the Red Cross Club not only enhances students’ knowledge and practical skills but also aligns with NIHSS’s mission to cultivate competent and compassionate professionals. The RCSS remains committed to empowering young individuals to contribute positively to society through meaningful volunteer work and humanitarian initiatives.
