UK to hand over Chagos Islands to Mauritius
- Chagossians of Seychellois descent not consulted
In a landmark decision, the United Kingdom has announced it will relinquish sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, a remote but strategically significant cluster in the Indian Ocean, ending more than half a century of control.
This pivotal agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, will see the UK transfer authority to Mauritius, including the critically important atoll of Diego Garcia, which has been a key military base for the United States.
