Seychelles pays tribute to Tony Mathiot through condolence book |30 January 2024
A condolence book in honour of Tony Mathiot is now open at the National Museums Seychelles and throughout the week, friends and acquaintances will be able to pay tribute to the renowned historian who passed away last week.
Yesterday, Seychelles NATION witnessed the signing of the book by some of Mr Mathiot’s former colleagues.
“I knew Mr Mathiot ever since he worked at the National Archives and we would always go to him for all the information we needed,” said museum curator Bella Rose.
She described Mr Mathiot as one who was always eager to share his vast knowledge about the country’s history, and enjoyed helping out kids with their research and homework.
“I was very shocked to hear of his passing because when I left the office he was well. He left us without a word,” said Mrs Rose, adding it would be hard to forget such a person.
Another colleague, Natasha Figaro also described Mr Mathiot’s passing as a huge loss. They were together in the office hours earlier. Ms Figaro said she is used to waving goodbye to him every afternoon but left without a word on the day of his passing.
“I have known Mr Mathiot for over 10 years. He was a person with an extraordinary mind, a good heart and I had great respect for him,” said Ms Figaro.
Those participating in the signing said it brought some peace to their hearts and were happy to preserve his memory in such a special way.
Staff of the National Museum Seychelles said Mr Mathiot’s work and his impact on people’s lives will forever remain in their hearts.
The condolence book is open daily from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
