International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day |15 April 2023
Thumbs up to our biomedical lab scientists
Today, the world celebrates the International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day with the theme ‘Guardians of Quality and Patient Safety’.
In a message sent by the President of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS), Marie Culliton, she noted: “This theme is central to everything we do in our work. We are committed to having biomedical laboratory scientists who are highly educated and trained to deliver a clinical laboratory diagnostic service for our people. Each of us knows that behind every sample we analyse is a person who must be cherished. The work that we do spans life from gestation through birth, childhood, adulthood and beyond.”
Ms Culliton further spoke about how biomedical laboratory scientists use scientific evidence in the provision of screening and diagnostic information; specifically, how a laboratory analytic procedure is selected, used and applied in clinical decisions for screening and diagnostic purposes.
Biomedical laboratory scientists practice in a manner to ensure information derived from analysing human specimens is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable.
“A Biomedical laboratory scientist is a professional who must adapt constantly to many changes in their practice, reflecting the trends in analytical methodologies, and improvements in diagnosis and treatment of disease and health care settings. Our poster celebrates Biomedical Laboratory Science Day. It encompasses the entire spectrum of a sample journey from the patient through the laboratory where it is the biomedical laboratory scientist who uses the best methods, with quality assurance, to ensure the correct result which is then interpreted correctly leading to treatment of the patient. I am proud to call myself a biomedical laboratory scientist,” concluded Ms Culliton.
Dr Léon Biscornet, chairperson of the Seychelles Biomedical Science Association (SBSA), stated that “I believe the sentiments expressed by the President of IFBLS well encapsulates the theme and sentiments of all biomedical laboratory personnel. I take this opportunity as the chairperson of the SBSA to wish all colleagues within the government and private sector as well as all the friends and sponsors of SBSA, a Happy International Biomedical Science Day!”
On this occasion, the Seychelles Biomedical Science Association organised a series of activities to celebrate and promote the biomedical laboratory science profession.
Yesterday a bring and buy sale was organised at the Red roof lobby where the staff were selling books, local jams, fruits and vegetables.
Today, Saturday, they are organising an outreach for HIV testing at Orion Mall, ground floor and members of the public are being invited to visit their booth to know their status.
