Homes for the elderly get donation of powdered milk

The official handover of the donation

The residents of Homes for the Elderly in Seychelles can enjoy many more cups of tea now that they have received a donation of NIDO powdered milk from the Chaka Brothers (PTY) LTD.

The handover of the donation took place on Friday in a brief ceremony held at the Au Cap Home for the Elderly.

Present for the handover were the chief executive and chairman of Chaka Brothers, Gafoor Yakub; the director general for Disabled and Elderly Division, Rosa Morin; the administrator for the Au Cap Home for the Elderly, Bernadette Esparon and residents of the home.

Addressing the gathering Ms Morin said we are all aware that countries around the world, including Seychelles, are going through different situations impacting the economy and the cost of living has increased.

She thanked Chaka Brothers for the support, noting that the contribution will bring relief to the elderly residents for the next two months.

She also reminded that the national theme for the family this year is ‘Mon Fanmir, Mon Leker’ (My Family, My Heart), and that Chaka Brothers’ kind gesture strongly reflects this theme.

“Let us not underestimate the power of even the smallest act of caring, because it has the potential to turn a life around!” Mr Yakub said in his remarks.

He noted that the support from carers, family, friends or businesses is very important for our elderly because they are more vulnerable than others.

The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Mrs Esparon to express the Au Cap home’s appreciation for the donation.

“By coincidence, this donation is a product that our residents consume a lot and this is in line with our home’s principles,” she noted.

She said that the home puts great emphasis on meals and activities that will safeguard the health of their precious residents.

As a token of gratitude, Mr Yakub was presented with a basket of vegetables that had been nurtured and grown by the elderly themselves.

In all, each home for the elderly has received 36 cans of powdered milk. The Au Cap home, which currently hosts 13 residents, was the first to receive the commodities, and the other 102 residents in the homes on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue will receive theirs by the end of this week.
