SADC Extraordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government |15 January 2022

HC Claude Morel represents Seychelles

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened an extraordinary summit meeting this week in Lilongwe to discuss the organisation’s efforts and deployment in bringing back peace and security in the northern province of Cabo Delgado of Mozambique.

High Commissioner Claude Morel attended the Summit on behalf of President Wavel Ramkalawan.

The Summit, which concluded on Wednesday January 12, 2022, was officially opened and chaired by Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, in his capacity as the chairperson of SADC, and was attended by the heads of state and high ranking government officials of the SADC members.

The meeting considered the latest reports on the evolution of the situation in the province and acknowledged that the SADC Mission in Mozambique had made considerable progress in combating acts of terrorism and extreme violence.

The mission’s mandate has been extended for a further three months.
