Olympic quiz-Pointe Larue, Mont Fleuri, Beau Vallon the winners |08 July 2016
This year, a lot of focus is on the Olympics Games that will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where athletes will put their bodies on the line for their country, but locally, our youth’s knowledge and understanding of the Olympic movement were tested during the annual Olympic quiz contest.
The Olympic quiz competition finals took place last week, where Pointe Larue secondary, Mont Fleuri secondary and Beau Vallon primary finished as the winners.
The annual Olympic quiz competition kicked off with the elimination rounds for both primary category (P4-P6) and secondary schools (S1-S2 and S3-S4) on June 15 on Mahé and the following day on Praslin. Five primary and five secondary schools took part. The best two teams qualified for the finals which took place on July 6.
This year’s competition featured questions about the modern Olympics and Olympism, the Olympic movement, the Commonwealth Games and Seychelles at the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.
In the P4-6 category, Rhy-Anne Vel, Rico Anta and Lutisha Jean of Beau Vallon school were the winners with a final score of 15-9 over the Au Cap team comprising Aaron Richmond, Angie Boniface and Heidi Bistoquet. Beau Vallon retained the title they won last year by defeating Cascade.
The Mont Fleuri secondary team of Sebastien Faure, Zoe Moncherry and Kayne Gonthier emerged victorious over the Beau Vallon secondary in the S1-S2 final on a big 11-3 score to reclaim the title they lost to Pointe Larue last year.
The Beau Vallon team comprised Kimberly Barbe, Nathaniella Payet and Hope Rusteau.
In the S3-S4 final, it was a third consecutive win in this category for Point Larue secondary whose team of Ian Gabriel, Lester Tirant and Steena Cole defeated the Mont Fleuri secondary trio of Sophie Ng, Janelle Felix and Joanne Laurette 12-7.
Both Steena Cole and Ian Gabriel were part of the team who were victorious in the same category last year and all three along with Tirant were in the S1-S2 final against Mont Fleuri in 2014, but this time they finished on the losing side.
The winners received their prizes from the secretary general of Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) Alain Alcindor who is also the director of the National Olympic Academy of Seychelles (NOAS).
This year the best scorers from each category were also rewarded. Rhy-Anne Vel, Kayne Gonthier and Lester Tirant clinched the award in their respective category.
