School children receive road safety leaflets |20 May 2016

Primary school children in Seychelles have benefited from a donation of road safety leaflets to enhance their safety on the roads.

The handover of the leaflets took place on Wednesday afternoon at the La Rosière primary school.

It was the general manager of Print House, Pascale d’Offay and Antoine Denousse, who prepared the leaflet , who handed over the donation to the school’s early childhood coordinator for crèche-P2, Anne Moustache.

This was in the presence of teachers from the school, pupils, parents and Print House staff.

Mr Desnousse said the road safety leaflet will help primary school children to know how to behave on the road and thus prevent and/or reduce the number of accidents in which they are involved.

“I can say it is a first in Seychelles where schools are being targeted regarding road safety issues,” said Mr Desnousse.

Expressing her gratitude to Mr Desnousse and Print House, Ms Moustache said the road safety leaflets will be used to educate the students on how to take safety measures while using the roads.

“This donation will educate the pupils on how to behave themselves while crossing the street and will enable them to better understand how to properly take safety measures while using the roads,” she said.

Mrs D’Offay said they wanted all the primary pupils in Seychelles to better understand road safety.

“This is a project that we started a few months back; we wanted to create a leaflet that the primary pupils will enjoy reading. The purpose of this project is to introduce road safety to pupils from all primary schools in Seychelles, to make them feel safe on the roads and aware of the dangers that surround them, hence avoid accidents,” she said.

Road safety refers to the methods and measures used to prevent children and adults from being killed or seriously injured while using the roads. Typical road users include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, vehicle passengers, and passengers of on-road public transport.

Best practices in modern road safety strategies focus on preventing serious injury and death from vehicle crashes despite human fallibility. Safe road design is now about implementing a Safe System approach.

Did you know that around 4,000 people die every day while using the roads? So make sure that you use the road safely, and not be another accident victim.
