Round Table raises R600,000 to help fight cancer |05 November 2014

In its effort to help in the fight against cancer in Seychelles, Round Table Seychelles has raised R600,000 for the purpose.

The money was raised from the sales of lottery tickets and other activities organised during this year’s Regatta held from September 26-28.

It will be used by the Ministry of Health for its cancer programme in the form of an awareness campaign and also to buy equipment.

The President of the Round Table Seychelles Vincent Kim Koon made these announcements in a small ceremony last week to reward winners of the lottery and other activities organised for this year’s Regatta.

The ceremony took place on Friday night at the La Plaine St Andre restaurant. “This year out of 150,000 tickets we sold 123,500 which is a record for us.

Along with other fund-raising activities we have managed to raise this sum for the cancer programme.  Last year we sold 101,500 tickets .I would like to thank the public and all our sponsors for their support especially the government for allowing the star prize vehicle to be imported duty free,” he said.

Present at the ceremony were the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange,  winners of the Miss and Mr Regatta contests, lottery winners, sponsors, other Round Table members and invited guests.

Minister St Ange congratulated and thanked the Round Table Seychelles for its involvement with the community.

“We need to applaud Round Table to work with the Ministry of Health in the fight against something that can affect anyone of us when we least expect it. I encourage all Seychellois to always give your support to this fun charitable event,” he said.

Present to collect her lottery star prize – a R685,000 Honda CR-V 2.OL Comfort Automatic sponsored by EHW – was Syvanne Constance of English River with lottery ticket 113873.

Applauded by the crowd, she was all smiles when she received the keys to her vehicle from EHW representative Gilbert Lebon.
Mrs Constance said it was her son, Warrence Constance, who bought her the ticket on that Regatta Sunday (September 28) while he was buying tickets for the whole family.

“I was selling in a stall that day when suddenly some people who know me came to tell me that I have won the first prize. I did not believe it at first until others came to confirm that I was the winner. I have never won a big prize like this in my life and I am very happy,” she said.

Mrs Contance, who was accompanied at the prize-giving ceremony by her son Warrence, said together with the rest of the family members they will decide what to do with the vehicle.

Other winners of the lottery also received their prizes that night.
