Make sure your child passegnger is fastened in |12 February 2011

But many people do not realise the danger if a child is not fastened in and not placed in an appropriate child seat.

Though there have not been many road accidents involving children in Seychelles, this does not mean that such accidents will never happen.

Parents and drivers should take their responsibility when they have children on board.

Many kids are seen standing on the front seat, or playing without their seatbelts – even sitting on the driver’s lap with their hands on the steering wheel.

These are not only illegal but also put the children, who do not know any better, at risk.

It is better if newborns and children up to five years old are put in a car seat in the back, well fastened.

Older kids also have to be tightly fastened in the back seat as airbags can cause injury to them.

Teenagers can sit in front, but they should wear their seatbelt.

Drivers have to ensure that once they are in a vehicle they fasten their seatbelt and see that their passengers have done the same.

Any driver whose passenger is not wearing a seatbelt is committing an offence and liable to a fixed penalty of R200.
