Karting-Fred, Gabriel, Rene, Rene-Cosgrow win Peter Rene memorial |03 September 2010
On a very hot day at the Champions Park Raceway, Roche Caïman, Peter Fred took victory in the Formula C class, while Andrew Gabriel won the Junior category. Dave Rene took the honours in the100 National and Liza Rene-Cosgrow triumphed in the ladies’ division.
Fred dominated the Formula C class but always had Roland Delcy, who took second place, close by, while third-place finisher Damien Bonnelame had to fight off both Rene-Cosgrow and Debra Mellon for a place on the podium. Rene-Cosgrow finished fourth and Mellon fifth.
The heats were really exciting with a lot of drama, one being when Bonnelame lost one of the front wheels of his kart while dicing with the front runners. Nothing serious happened but it took about 15 minutes before the wheel was discovered in the bush some 100 yards away from the incident scene.
Andrew Gabriel won the Junior race in the absence of Montel Kurz, who is overseas. Shelton Vital was his main challenger and took a solid second place, while Yannick Gabriel finished third after a hard fight with Christian Port-Louis.
Rene-Cosgrow had to fight all the way to the end with Mellon for the win in the Ladies’ class. Bernadette Mein had to take it easy after an earlier incident in the heats when she sprained her neck in a collision.
Rene took victory in the 100 National, with Rene-Cosgrow taking second place only after a lap-by-lap fight with Stephan Simon, who had narrowly beaten her into second place in the earlier heat.
John Simon had tyre problems in the final and had to slow down just to get to the finish line.
