Football: Barclays women’s league-United Sisters retain title with goal avalanche

United Sisters have retained the league title

Going into their last league match against the International School on Saturday at the Stad Popiler, United Sisters had a goal difference of +34 (38 for and four against), while leaders La Digue Veuve had +50 (64 for and 14 against).

The players of coach Jean-Marc Benstrong scored 20 times against the International School to bring their goals tally to 58 to win the league title on a goal difference of +54, four more than La Digue Veuve.

Champions United Sisters and La Digue Veuve lost once each in nine matches.

Skippered by former long distance runner and Olympia Coast striker Natacha Bibi, La Digue Veuve won the first-round home fixture 2-0, but United Sisters put an end to their seven-game unbeaten run with a 3-1 second-round win at the Stad Popiler.
The league title is the second piece of silverware United Sisters have won this year.

In March, they came from a goal down to edge Praslin-based Ste Anne United 2-1 in the Patron’s Cup.
Coach Benstrong told Sports Nation that his team will be all out to win the two other cup competitions remaining on the calendar.

“Collectively, we are superior to the other teams, who boast some good players. Our collectivity gives us an edge over our opponents and I don’t see why we cannot win the forthcoming cup competitions,” said the former Red Star and Seychelles central defender.

International School have finished the season in fifth position with three points after just one win in nine games. They have scored seven goals and conceded 90.

The last match is tomorrow between former champions Olympia Coast and Ste Anne United.
A sixth team, former champions Dolphins, pulled out of the championship after playing just five matches.
