Choose age-appropriate toys for your kids |26 December 2008

Is this toy safe for the child? Pay attention to the recommendations on the toy’s packaging as to the age group the toy is made for. Avoid buying toys that are indicated as being appropriate to a child older than the person you are buying the gift for.

Is the toy smaller than the child’s fist? If the answer is yes, then it is not safe for the child to be playing with it, as it may pose a choking hazard to your child.

Does this toy have small, moveable parts or loose parts? If the answer is yes, then make sure the child’s age is appropriate to the recommendations on the toy’s package.

Is the toy heavy? Heavy toys can fall and break or hurt little feet and toes. It is always best to purchase toys that are just right for children, that is, they can easily lift and carry it.

Does the toy need electrical power to operate? Toys that need electricity to operate should normally be reserved for older children.

Are there sharp edges on the toy? Sharp edges are a safety hazard and should not be given to children, especially without parental supervision.
