Alain Ramanisum to give two shows in Seychelles |23 November 2008
Well known here for his repertoire of scintillating segas, notably Li Tourne and Elle, the singer will perform on La Digue on Friday November 28th, and will make a second appearance at the Ex-SMB Hall on Mahe the following day.
One of Mauritius’ most talented sega artists of recent times, the singer/songwriter is coming here hoping to expand his fan base, especially among enthusiasts of the sega beat, in which he has created his own unique style.
And for the listening pleasure of his fans, this unique beat may be given new growth some time soon, as he intends to incorporate a bit of his Indian background into it by introducing the bhopjuri, an instrument of Tamil origin.
Enjoying a successful solo career nowadays, the 30-year-old was the nucleus of one of Mauritius’ most successful bands, Cassiya – known in Seychelles for their many successes.
In fact Ramanisum started the band when he was still a teenager and was arranging music for the likes of Roger Clency and Babale at 20. He moved up a notch in his 20s to work with some of Mauritius’ musical greats, including Tian Corentian, Bruno Mooken, Jean Claude Gaspar, Ton Vye and Natty Jah, collaborations that finally convinced him to compose his own music and write his own lyrics.
Ever since the Mauritian beat, particularly the sega, found in him a new musical hero, he has aimed to spread its music beyond the region as far as Europe and the Americas.
What is all the hype you ask? The Seychellois public will find out for sure next week.
In the meantime, tickets for the show on Mahe are on sale at R75. It is scheduled to start a 9pm and buses will be available for transfers to and from the Exhibition Hall at Roche Caïman.
