More talks on Islam after earlier success |22 August 2008
The Islamic Society of Seychelles (ISS) is to hold the Explore Islam talks and display information next week, starting on Monday with a public lecture – entitled the Islamic World View – at the International Conference Centre at 7pm.
The ISS says the talks, which began in 2006 to try to change the negative view many Seychellois have of Islam and its followers, have helped to soften the religion’s image with the public.
This year the organisers are focusing on the relevance of the Qur’an for modern society, to show Muslims and other Seychellois it is a book of guidance that relates to the times we live in.
The series of talks will be given by Dr Jabal Buaben, a lecturer at Birmingham University in the UK, and Islamic information such as brochures will be displayed in the National Library lobby for the whole week.
The talks will aim not only to educate the general public but to inform Muslims themselves of the wider implications of their faith.
The Imam of the Al Nahyan mosque in Victoria said that after the Explore Islam week has ended, people who want to know more about the faith can always visit an Islamic centre for a chat.
