Basketball: Charity Matches-Wins for Stars, Baya, Dynamics |04 March 2008
Coach Malbrook had to thank his wife Simone Malbrook for netting two free-throws with seconds left to play to give Anse Etoile Stars a 44-42 win over HotShots in a closely contested affair.
Simone Malbrook carried the scoring load with 14 points for defending League champions Stars who won the third and fourth quarters 16-15 and 10-8. With Simone Asba having put an end to her playing career, the Stars gave playing time to their young recruits, but their only other player in double digits was experienced left-handed playmaker Lindy Mathiot with 10 points.
Lanky Tina Agathine led all scores with 15 points in a losing cause for Anse Boileau-based HotShots who also got 11 points from international and captain Myra Solin.
Playing with a rather small line-up, Baya played big in the fourth quarter, outscoring PLS Hawks 22-8 for a famous 71-64 win.
Despite fouling out, skipper and Seychelles international Dave Roseline was instrumental in guiding Baya to victory, scoring 15 points.
With the score tied at 64-64 with under a minute lefty to play, Jean-Paul Camille and Hendricks Denis netted a jump shot each before newly acquired small forward Nigel Cafrine buried a 3-pointer to put the icing on the cake for coach Malbrook’s team.
Veteran Jim Domingue finished with a game-high 27 points, while fellow big men Rodney ‘Malidor’ Lozé and Neddy ‘Oye’ Fanchette added 14 and 12 points apiece.
Speaking to Sports Nation, coach Malbrook said:“The wins will surely boost the morale of my players as both Baya and Anse Etoile Stars hope to have a good 2008 season.”
In the day’s other match, RC Dynamics got 13 points from both Kenneth Domingue and James Joubert, while captain Tony Marday added 12 points in a 72-54 win over Mont Fleuri Dawgz. Jim Créa had the hot hands for the Dawgz with 20 points.
