Sharp police officers keep vigil at Nation |29 December 2004
The crack had resulted from the effects of the tidal waves which swept through the area on Sunday December 26.
Thinking that there had been a robbery, the officers entered the office and checked for signs of theft but found none.
Using remarkable ingenuity, the three managed to trace and contact the publishing division's senior personnel and maintained vigil until a senior editor arrived at 3.30 a.m. to investigate the officers' discovery.
The editor used temporary means to secure the office until Tuesday December 28 when more permanent measures were taken to safeguard publishing equipment in the offices.
Upon learning this, Nation staff Tuesday expressed admiration and gratitude for the way the officers acted.
"They in fact used the personal mobile telephone of one of them to alert members of staff," a journalist they contacted said, identifying the officers as Lance Corporal Julien Sanders and police constables Jamella Bastienne and Medeline Labonte.
