Women's Football-Olympia Coast renew with success |20 October 2004
With nine wins and a draw in 10 matches in the two-round championship, Olympia Coast have dethroned Dolphins as League champions.
Coach Gerard Gamatis was overwhelmed when contacted by Sports Nation on Tuesday.
"We were simply unlucky last year but this time we've worked tremendously hard on our mistakes. At one time, we even thought of giving up because of many problems we were facing, but I am glad that we remained as a team despite all the odds against us. I am even more grateful that we've won the championship. It was important for us not to lose any match in order to remain in the lead," a proud Gamatis explained.
He added that they were expecting a tougher challenge from bitter rivals Dolphins.
"Dolphins were our main opponents last year and this year we expected them to pose us a lot of trouble, but it was not to be the case," he said.
However, Gamatis believes that the women's League this year was not only interesting but also very entertaining.
"It was a hard championship as it was more competitive than those of previous years and we really had to give it our best shot. But I see it as a positive step towards the development of women's football here," he noted.
The Port Glaud-based team finished the two-round championship unbeaten in 10 outings with 28 points.
Dolphins, who last year achieved a League and Cup double, are second on 19 points from a possible 30.
In third position are St Anne United with 11 points, three more than fourth-placed Revivers.
United Sisters are fifth with six points, while winless Anse Aux Pins Blasters are at the foot of the table with four points.
