Seychelles takes part in high-level MEPC 83 session in London

Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, is currently in London attending the 83rd session of the International Maritime Organisation's Marine Environment Protection Committee which took place from April 7 to 11, 2025 at International Maritime Organisation headquarters.

The International Maritime Organisation's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) session focused on finalising and approving mid-term measures aimed at decarbonising international shipping, driving the transition towards green, zero-emission fuels and technologies. These negotiations are critical for small island developing states (Sids), such as Seychelles, which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and global maritime policies.
During one of the sessions, Minister Derjacques joined other ministers from Pacific and island nations in a high-level meeting with the Rt. Hon. Heidi Alexander, United Kingdom Secretary of State for Transport. The discussions primarily centred around the MEPC 83 agenda, particularly the need for decisive outcomes that address climate challenges while safeguarding the interests of Sids and least developed countries (LDCs).
Key points of discussion included:
1. The use of decarbonisation funds to support Sids and LDCs in their transition and to address the impacts of maritime decarbonisation.
2. The need to take into account the specific circumstances and vulnerabilities of Sids.
3. Maintaining alignment with the 1.5°C climate trajectory and ensuring a just and equitable transition.
Minister Derjacques emphasised the importance of continued UK support for Sids throughout the MEPC 83 negotiations.
The minister is being accompanied by the chief executive of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority, Captain Daniel Adam; principal secretary for Energy and Climate Change Tony Imaduwa; chief policy analyst in Ministry of Transport, Veronique Nibourette; and Acting High Commissioner (principal counsellor) for Seychelles based in the United Kingdom, Patsy Moustache.

The minister was expected to join other leaders from the Pacific State for their joint closing statement.
