PM Modi inaugurates world’s highest railway arch – The Chenab Rail Bridge
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, during his visit to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
This marks his first visit to the region following the launch of Operation Sindoor last week.
Towering 359 metres above the Chenab River – higher than the Eiffel Tower – the bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering. Spanning 1,315 metres in length, the steel arch bridge has been designed to withstand high seismic activity and strong wind speeds, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in large-scale infrastructure development.
Built by Indian Railways over more than two decades, the bridge is expected to greatly enhance regional connectivity. It will cut travel time between Jammu and Srinagar by two to three hours, offering a faster and more efficient link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi said the bridge symbolises India’s determination and progress, and it will serve as a lifeline for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Apart from reducing travel time, the Chenab Rail Bridge is also seen as a catalyst for tourism, trade, and economic growth in the region. It is expected to play a key role in integrating Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the national mainstream.
