Downward trend in number of new Covid-19 cases |18 May 2021
The Ministry of Health continues to record a downward trend in the number of new Covid-19 cases in the country.
The positive cases recorded from Wednesday May 12 to Saturday May 15 are as follows: Wednesday - 213, Thursday - 201, Friday - 181, and Saturday - 162.
In a press communiqué dated May 17, 2021, the ministry reports a total of 1903 active cases, as of yesterday, with a cumulative total of 9764 confirmed cases since the pandemic started.
Around 583 Covid-19 confirmed cases have recovered since the ministry’s update last week.
Most cases are contacts of positive cases and are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
The Ministry of Health highlighted that the majority of patients who are admitted at the Covid-19 treatment facilities have not been vaccinated.
Similarly, almost all of the critical and severe cases of the virus in the country that have required intensive care had not been vaccinated.
To date, none of the 35 individuals who have passed away from Covid-19 had been fully inoculated.
The Ministry of Health has started giving jabs of the Russia made vaccine Sputnik V, in addition to China’s Sinopharm vaccine and Covishield, a version of the AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in India.
Due to the specificities of the Sputnik V vaccine, the health ministry is advising those who wish to take the vaccine to call in ahead to book an appointment.
