Tom Bowers, British sculptor who made Seychelles his home, dies |15 March 2021
Artist Tom Bowers visited Seychelles on holiday with his family for the first time in 1981 and instantly fell in love with our beautiful islands and decided to make it his second home when he moved here permanently in 1986.
Mr Bowers sadly passed away earlier last week and was laid to rest on Friday.
He was 84 years old.
He is survived by wife Ellen and daughter Katy. His other daughter, Amy, died in 2012.
Mr Bowers and his family settled at Santa Maria, Anse à la Mouche where he set up his studio in the heart of a pristine and quiet environment which has never stopped inspiring him to create a myriad of interesting bronze sculptures over the years some of which are placed at landmark spots across the country.
Among the most popular of his creations is the national Liberty Monument in the heart of Victoria which replaced the Zonm Lib Monument. The Liberty monument was unveiled by President James Michel on June 29, 2014 to mark 38 years of independence from Britain.
The Liberty Monument depicts a man and a woman proudly looking forward and flying the national flag high above their heads.
The life-like characters which have never stopped attracting public attention, highlight the great talent of Mr Bowers.
He said in an interview at that time that he was inspired by the drive which existed in the country to bring about national unity.
