Providence landfill shredder ready for operations |26 September 2026

The Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) on Thursday demonstrated its waste shredder at the Providence Landfill as part of final preparations ahead of the start of full operations, expected next week.

The demonstration formed part of the agency’s pilot phase, during which the equipment is being tested to ensure it is fully operational and ready for service.

The Red Giant Shredder VB950DK, manufactured in Germany, was purchased by the government six years ago.

LWMA chief executive Shane Emilie said the agency has identified five categories of waste suitable for processing by the machine based on its technical specifications: green waste, bulky waste, white goods, light scrap metal and tyres. These are also among the largest waste streams entering the landfill.

During the demonstration, the shredder processed tyres, refrigerators and wooden boards, illustrating its ability to handle different types of bulky waste.
