SBC clarifies position on senior journalist

The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) is aware of public comments and speculation concerning a senior journalist following her attendance at the public protest held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in relation to the proposed Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation Bill 2026.

SBC wishes to clarify the following:

  • SBC has not dismissed the journalist concerned. No instruction has been issued to management by the Board, or by any external body or individual, to terminate her employment.
  • The Corporation is aware that the journalist has submitted her resignation, which is being handled in accordance with established internal procedures.
  • SBC has policies relating to public conduct and participation in political activities. These policies are designed to safeguard the Corporation’s independence and the credibility of its journalism, while recognising the rights of staff as citizens.
  • Staffing decisions are made independently by SBC management. The Corporation does not take instructions on such matters from external bodies or individuals.
  • Where concerns arise regarding staff conduct, SBC addresses them fairly, objectively, and in accordance with due process, applicable policies, and established internal procedures.

As this is an individual staff matter, SBC will not comment further on the details. Any relevant internal process will be handled confidentially and in line with the Corporation’s policies and procedures.

SBC is constitutionally mandated to operate as an independent and impartial national broadcaster, serving the public interest without fear or favour. This responsibility applies not only to editorial output, but also to the professional standards expected of staff whose public roles may affect confidence in the Corporation’s independence, impartiality, and credibility.

SBC recognises and respects the rights of its staff to hold personal views and to participate in civic life. At the same time, employees of a public broadcaster have professional responsibilities to avoid conduct that could reasonably create a perception of partiality or compromise editorial independence.

The Corporation’s role is to report on matters of public interest in a balanced and impartial manner. Maintaining clear independence from political activities – particularly on issues directly affecting SBC – is essential to preserving public trust in the national broadcaster.

SBC is also aware of the wider public discussion surrounding the proposed Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation Bill 2026. The Board of Directors has already communicated its position on the Bill, and the Corporation welcomes constructive public discourse that may contribute to an improved legislative framework for the national broadcaster.
