Celebrating childhood: What International Children’s Day means to the children
Every year on June 1, countries around the world observe International Children's Day, a special occasion dedicated to celebrating children and recognising their rights, well-being and importance in society.
The day serves as a reminder that every child deserves a safe environment, access to education, good health care, protection from harm, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
International Children's Day has a long history dating back to 1925, when representatives from different countries gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, for the World Conference on Child Welfare. During the conference, the idea of setting aside a day to focus on the needs and welfare of children gained support. Over the years, many countries adopted June 1 as a day to celebrate children and raise awareness about issues affecting them.
