Prison riot inquiry opens with harrowing inmate testimonies

The Commission of Inquiry into the Montagne Posée prison riot of December 5, 2024, opened its first session yesterday (May 4, 2026) at the prison, exposing serious weaknesses in the system.
The session was chaired by Justice Alfred Mavedzenge, assisted by Judge Melchior Vidot and former Commissioner of Prisons Vic Tirant. The three commissioners were sworn in on March 25, 2026, by President Patrick Herminie at State House.
