Former President Wavel Ramkalawan’s message on World Press Freedom Day |04 May 2026
‘Press freedom: A pillar of democracy, not a privilege’
“On this World Press Freedom Day, we must speak not only of principles, but of realities.
“A free press is not a privilege granted by authority, it is a fundamental pillar of democracy that must be protected, exercised, and, when necessary, defended. Without it, accountability weakens, truth becomes negotiable, and the people are left without a clear and trusted voice.
“The media must stand as a voice for the voiceless. It must be bold enough to question, courageous enough to expose, and principled enough to remain fair. A press that is silenced by fear, pressured by authority, or shaped by influence cannot serve the people as it should. Independence is not optional, it is essential.
“At the same time, press freedom must never be mistaken for freedom from responsibility. The power to inform carries with it the duty to be accurate, balanced, and just. The media must defend what is right, not what is convenient. It must resist the pull of politics, reject favouritism, and avoid becoming a tool for division or personal agendas.
“Seychelles deserves better than a hesitant or compromised media. Our country deserves a professional, strong, and confident press, one that speaks truth without hesitation, reports without bias, and holds all to account equally. A media that neither fears authority nor seeks to serve it, but instead remains firmly anchored in the public interest.
“We must also be clear: press freedom cannot thrive in an environment where truth is distorted, where misinformation is tolerated, or where responsibility is abandoned. Strengthening our media landscape requires not only freedom, but discipline, ethics, and an unwavering commitment to credibility.
“As a nation, we must continue to build a culture where truth is valued, where journalists are able to operate freely, and where the media fulfils its role as a watchdog; not selectively, but consistently.
“A free and fearless press is not an obstacle to governance; it is a necessary partner in ensuring that governance remains honest, transparent, and accountable.
“On this World Press Freedom Day, I reaffirm my belief that Seychelles must uphold and demand a media that is independent, responsible, and resolute in its duty to the people.”
