President Herminie’s Labour Day message |30 April 2026

‘Through work and unity, Seychelles will rise’
“On the occasion of International Labour Day, I extend my deepest appreciation to all those whose work, dedication, and professionalism sustain the life of our nation. Today, we honour the contribution of each and every individual who, through their labour, supports the continued development and progress of Seychelles.
“This year’s theme, ‘Empowering the workforce, building a resilient future’, speaks not only to a national priority, but to a global imperative. In a rapidly evolving world, the resilience of nations is increasingly defined by the strength, adaptability and unity of their workforce.
“As Seychelles marks its 50th Independence Anniversary, we reflect with pride on the generations of workers who laid the foundations of our nation. Through discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance, they transformed our economy, built our institutions, and strengthened our capacity to withstand adversity. It is this legacy of hard work and resilience that continues to guide us today.
“We mark this occasion, however, at a time of heightened global uncertainty. Shifting geopolitical dynamics are influencing economic conditions, trade flows, and employment prospects worldwide. For a small and open economy such as ours, these developments test not only our systems, but our collective resilience. Yet, just as those before us rose to meet the challenges of their time, so too must we draw on that same spirit of determination and unity.
“Our response must be measured and forward-looking. In partnership with employers and social partners, we remain committed to safeguarding employment, supporting livelihoods, and sustaining economic
stability. At the same time, we must continue to invest in skills development, productivity, and innovation,
ensuring that our workforce is equipped to meet the demands of a changing world.
“International Labour Day also reminds us of the dignity of work and the enduring importance of fairness,
opportunity, and mutual respect. These principles remain central to our national development and to the kind of society we strive to build.
“To all workers; your contribution is the foundation of our resilience and our future.
“To employers; your commitment to fairness, dignity, and safe working conditions remains essential.
“To our young people; you carry the promise of tomorrow, and we must continue to create pathways for
you to thrive.
“Let us move forward with unity, discipline, and purpose, confident in our collective ability to navigate uncertainty and build a future that is resilient, inclusive, and prosperous for all.
“Together, through the dignity of our work and the strength of our unity, we will not merely withstand the challenges before us, we will rise above them and shape a future worthy of our highest aspirations as a nation.
“I wish you all a Happy International Labour Day!”
Dr Patrick Herminie
