Minister Idith Alexander visits the fisheries sector |28 March 2026

On Friday March 20, Minister for Employment and Human Resource Planning, Idith Alexander, called on three businesses involved in fishing and post-harvest activities, including processing, preserving and exportation.
The visit, her third sectorial one since the beginning of the month, reinforces her ministry’s plan and commitment for the year to strengthen partnership and collaboration with key actors of the economy, having started with the tourism sector and agriculture the previous two weeks.
Marlu Seychelles and Ocean Basket are businesses that own fishing vessels and operate processing facilities, while Amirantes Fisheries is mainly about preparing, preserving and packaging of fish products to sell on the local market and exportation to overseas market.
During the visit, the minister and her delegation toured the facilities, interacted with the workers and consulted with the leaders of the businesses to understand their challenges as well as opportunities for continued job creation in the sector. As is the case for other businesses across sectors, their main difficulty when it comes to employment is the scarcity of local talents to join the industry.
“My ministry is committed to devising policies that work for the sector’s growth, recognising that your buy-in is necessary to ensure their successful implementation. The visit is about hearing and understanding your needs first and foremost and to share information on government’s initiatives aimed at addressing our labour market challenges, specifically youth unemployment,” said the minister.
The weekly visitations herald a solid public-private partnership intended to better navigate the market dynamics and ensuring long-term resilience of the sector. The minister discussed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the businesses visited that she said will mutually benefit both parties in its quest for sustainability of the sector and country.
