Africa’s ocean moment: What Mombasa 2026 means for Seychelles?

 

In June 2026, Kenya will host the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa and Kilifi – the first time this global forum is held on African soil.

For Seychelles, a pioneer of the blue economy and ocean diplomacy, this is a strategic opportunity to shape an agenda that links healthy seas with national development and regional solidarity.

Launched in 2014, the Our Ocean Conference series has become a key platform for mobilising commitments on marine protection, sustainable fisheries, climate action, maritime security and pollution. Over 10 editions, governments, business, civil society and philanthropy have announced financial pledges and policy measures that have helped expand marine protected areas, strengthen the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), and support innovation in coastal resilience. Seychelles has benefited directly, including through debt-for-nature swaps, marine spatial planning and international partnerships recognising our leadership.
