SUM calls for solidarity on Slavery Abolition Day
“Seychelles today (February 1) marks Abolition of Slavery Day, a day of deep national reflection and collective remembrance. It is a moment for us, as a people and as a nation, to pause and honour our history not to dwell in it, but to learn from it.
“On this day, Seychelles United Movement pays tribute to our ancestors and elders whose sacrifices, resilience, and courage shaped the path that brought us to where we are today. We owe them our respect and our gratitude. Their struggles laid the foundations of our freedoms, our identity, and our shared national story.
“Seychelles is a proud rainbow nation diverse in origin, culture, and heritage, yet united as one people. Our history reminds us that division weakens, but unity builds. As we pay homage to our past, we must also recognise that history is a lesson, not a destination. We cannot live in the past. We must move forward with purpose and vision.
“This day calls on us to reflect not only on where we came from, but on where we are going. The responsibility rests with us, today, to build a better, fairer, and more inclusive Seychelles for future generations. A nation our children and grandchildren can be proud of.
“As a people, it is time to move forward together. To focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. To work collectively, because only together can we build a strong, just, and prosperous future.
“On this Abolition of Slavery Day, Seychelles United Movement reaffirms its commitment to unity, dignity, and progress. Let us honour our history by shaping a future defined by solidarity, opportunity, and hope for all.”
