‘Pa bezwen boury labou’
This was the admonition of an eminent person when the subject of slavery cropped up in a conference many years ago. The thinking was that slavery was a thing of the past and that it was best left there.
Slavery itself was certainly something in the past but the reluctance to talk about it seemed to indicate that it could still have implications in the present; that in the “mud” that had settled there would be matter of relevance were it to be stirred.
