Swimming - Liliana Mason smashes 18-year-old 200m breaststroke record |20 December 2019
In December 2001, Julie Low Thion set a new Seychelles national short course record in the 200m breaststroke and at that time Liliana Mason, who is now 13 years old, was not born yet.
Exactly 18 years after, coincidently, once again in the month of December, Mason re-wrote the record books by erasing the old time of 3 minutes 01.87 seconds (3:01.87) when she stopped the clock at 2:58.99.
She made the exploit last week during the Mauritius Summer National Championships which took place from December 12-15 at the Pavilion Swimming Pool in Quatre Bornes.
In the final, Mason, who swims for the Mahé Skimmers Sports Club, finished first ahead of Alina Muslun (3:02.56) and Ting Lam Tze (3:09.27).
Her time has been homologated by the Seychelles Swimming Association.
Other than the gold and new record in 200m breaststroke, the youngster also contributed another eight medals – six gold and two silver – to her team’s tally which was 30 at the championship.
She won gold in 50m, 100m, 400m and 800m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley, while her two silver medals were in the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke.
