Dr Twomey taking her oaths before President Herminie

Justice Mathilda Twomey sworn in as Commissioner

Justice Mathilda Twomey was yesterday sworn in as the commissioner for the newly established Commission of Inquiry into the Sublease and Development of Assomption Island.

During the brief ceremony yesterday morning at State House officiated by President Patrick Herminie, Dr Twomey took her oath and signed the official documents to formalise her appointment.

This was in the presence of Vice-President Sebastien Pillay, State House officials, members of the press, among other guests.

The appointment of Justice Twomey, a judge of the Court of Appeal, follows a declaration made by President Herminie in the National Assembly in November 2025 to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the construction of a tourism establishment in an extremely sensitive biosecurity area on Assomption.

The commission was appointed on December 5 and was approved by the National Assembly on December 10, 2025.
