Seychelles engages with UNDP on collaboration for inclusive Blue Economy development

The Department of Blue Economy (DBE) recently held a meeting with representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Oliver Pasnin and Fabani Appavou on the sidelines of UNOC3, to explore expanded areas of cooperation in fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-driven blue economy in Seychelles.

The meeting highlighted a suite of forward-looking initiatives designed to unlock the full potential of the blue economy for all Seychellois, with a strong focus on inclusivity, particularly youth and women empowerment. Central to the dialogue was the emerging Youth Blue Economy Group and the recognition of women and gender equality as catalytic forces in driving sustainable blue growth. The initiative aims to empower marginalised and underserved communities by fostering local ownership and participation through targeted capacity-building, mentorship, and the creation of accessible pathways into high-potential blue economy sectors.

Key outcomes and areas of support identified during the meeting include strengthening capacity-building initiatives and fostering development across both traditional and emerging blue economy sectors. This support extends beyond conventional scientific research, incorporating innovation, entrepreneurial development, and sustainable practices, thus positioning Seychelles for diversified growth and enhanced economic resilience.

Additionally, the meeting emphasised the empowerment of women entrepreneurs through the Export Accelerator Programme, which offers structured support designed to transform women-led SMEs into export-ready businesses.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of digital transformation and innovation, alongside the promotion of knowledge-sharing platforms designed to boost youth engagement and position Seychelles as a global exemplar in sustainable blue economy development.

The meeting reaffirmed the mutual commitment of the Department of Blue Economy and UNDP to co-develop and scale initiatives that blend scientific innovation with social inclusion, ensuring that Seychelles continues to lead in sustainable ocean-based economic transformation.
