Reverend Danny Elizabeth has been elected as the new Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Seychelles. He is the second Seychellois to head the Anglican Church in Seychelles after the late Archbishop French Chang-Him. The last Anglican Archbishop of Seychelles was the Most Reverend James Wong who retired in December 2024 after a 15-year tenure.
The election of the 58-year-old priest as the 5th bishop of the Anglican Diocese took place on Saturday at St Paul’s Cathedral, Victoria. The secret ballot by the local religious Electoral College, made up of acting clergy and laity, was presided over by the Most Reverend Dr Gilbert Rateloson Rakotondravelo, the Archbishop and Primate of the Province of the Indian Ocean.
Bishop Danny Elizabeth, who was the Diocese’ Ecclesiastical Administrator, was chosen ahead of the other nominee, Reverend Brian Volcère. They had been nominated by the seven Bishops of the seven dioceses in the Indian Ocean – Madagascar (6), and Mauritius (1). Seychelles, which is the 8th diocese, was excluded.
