Seychelles’ islands showcase significant biodiversity coverage

La Digue island leads in biodiversity coverage with 52 percent of its area designated as key biodiversity zones. It is followed by Praslin with 40 percent and the main island Mahé at 37 percent.
These statistics highlighting the extensive biodiversity coverage across Seychelles’ three main islands were released on May 22 by the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity.
La Digue, the smallest of the three main islands at 9.8 km², boasts an impressive 5.1 km² of key biodiversity areas, equating to 52 percent of its total area. This high coverage underscores La Digue’s critical role in preserving Seychelles’ unique ecosystems.
