Russia marked the 80th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany with a grand parade in Moscow’s Red Square, attended by over 20 foreign leaders.
The Victory Day spectacle, celebrated on May 9, is Russia’s most important secular holiday.
After subdued celebrations in past years with few tanks and almost no visiting leaders, this year Russia welcomed Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the leaders of Slovakia, Serbia, Egypt, Vietnam, Venezuela and others from what Moscow calls “friendly countries” to its most solemn and emotional holiday.
“Truth and justice are on our side,” said President Putin. “The whole country, society, people support the participants of the special military operation,” adding that their determination and bravery has “brought us only victory”.
