Alain Alcindor takes the hot seat

 

Alain Alcindor is the new president of the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, replacing Antonio Gopal who had occupied the post for the past 33 years.

Mr Alcindor was elected into the post during the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on Saturday at the Olympic House, Roche Caïman.

Running uncontested, Alcindor received 22 out of the 23 votes to become the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association’s (Socga) fourth president, replacing Antonio Gopal who had been in the post since 1992.

The two previous presidents were John Pillay (1979 - 1982), and John Mascarenhas (1982-1991).

Former sprinter and Olympian Denis Rose is Socga’s new vice-president, replacing Michel Bau, while Fatime Kanté is the association’s new secretary general.

Other members of the Socga’s executive committee are Bernadette Contoret (treasurer), Norbert Dogley, Jefferey Lagrenade, Ravi Valmont, Belinda Valmont, and Sedrick Nicette (ordinary members).

Born on March 7, 1964, Mr Alcindor completed his primary studies at the Glacis primary school, before moving to the Seychelles College for his ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level studies. He then pursued a degree in civil engineering at Charles University in Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic.
