The Seychelles Association of Retired Educational Professionals (Sarep) last Saturday held its first annual general meeting since its inception in April 2022.

The representatives for Praslin and La Digue Sarep chapters were also present for the meeting which was held at the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (S.I.T.E).

The chairperson of Sarep, Jeanne Simeon, presented the Annual Report for the period 2022-2023.  She highlighted the many achievements made during Sarep’s first year in office such as:  the strong collaboration and support of partners and stakeholders from various organisations especially those supporting the national reading project ‘Sesel Lir Avek Mwan’ (SLAM).

Various organisations have made donations of different forms to Sarep as a way of showing recognition for the work that Sarep is doing for the community.

The chairperson also reported that during the year Sarep undertook various social events and fundraising activities in support of the reading project and for fellowship in line with the association’s mandate.

Odile Octave, Sarep’s treasurer, shared the Auditor’s Financial Report for the year 2022.  Both the annual and the auditor’s reports received unanimous endorsement of members.

A call for action was made by the chairperson which necessitates innovation and commitment on the part of everyone.

Members unanimously approved a decision to cancel the end of year Christmas dinner planned for December 27 in solidarity with families who have been sadly affected by the explosion of December 7 as well as the natural disaster.

An invitation was extended to members who wish to make a small financial contribution towards one of Sarep’s members and her family affected by the December 7 explosion.

In closing, the chairperson expressed her appreciation for the support that Sarep has received from its members and partners which has helped to sustain the level of commitment and enthusiasm in the work of the executive committee and sub-committees thus helping Sarep to remain vibrant and relevant.

She informed the meeting that in 2024 the reading campaign will continue with sensitisation sessions at district level for parents of children aged 0-5 years old.
