A fire broke out in the generator room at the new La Digue hospital yesterday morning.

According to the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency, the damage was restricted to the generator room.

In a telephone conversation with Seychelles NATION, the La Digue station officer, Christopher Matombe said they were alerted about the fire at 7.04am and took roughly two minutes to reach the site.

The 15-crew member, supported by two vehicles, took around one and a half hours to tackle the fire. “45 minutes of that was to put the fire under control,” explained Mr Matombe.

He said the fire did not cause any damage to the structure of the generator room nor the newly built hospital, which is located five metres away from the generator room.

“At the moment it is unclear what may have started the fire and our investigation will determine the cause,” stated Mr Matombe.

The new St Mary’s hospital was officially opened on August 15, 2023.
