VP Afif attends 8th Open Government Partnership Global Summit in Estonia |12 September 2023
Vice-President Ahmed Afif attended the 8th Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit from September 5 – 7, 2023 in Tallinn, Estonia.
The OGP, which was launched in 2011, is a gathering of government reformers and civil society leaders to create action plans that make governments more inclusive, responsive, and accountable.
Collaboration between government, civil society, and other stakeholders is at the heart of the OGP process and has many long-term benefits for governments, civil society and citizens.
The OGP global platform includes 76 countries, over 100 local governments and thousands of civil society organisations.
Seychelles joined the OGP in 2018 and implemented its first National Action Plan (NAP) between 2019 and 2021.
The second National Action Plan, which will be launched in December 2023, will be based on key government priorities for a more inclusive, participatory and transparent government.
During the Global Summit, the vice-president briefed members on the actions of the government of Seychelles to increase transparency and improve citizens engagement in the decision making process.
The vice-president participated in two panel discussions, one on the ‘Role of Infotechnology and Education in Promoting Democratic Values’, in which he shared the experience of Seychelles’ private and public partnership to ensure internet connectivity and access.
The second panel discussion was titled ‘How Open Government can help address corruption in climate change’. In his intervention, Vice-President Afif shared the successes of Seychelles in improving transparency in the fisheries sector through the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI). He also placed emphasis on the important measures taken by Seychelles to mitigate climate change despite the fact that its carbon emission was negligible.
On the sidelines of the Summit, the vice-president also held bilateral discussions with Alar Karis, President of the Republic of Estonia; Kaja Kallas, Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia; and paid a courtesy call on Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the National Assembly of Estonia.
The vice-president was accompanied to the Summit by Margaret Moumou, the OGP point of contact for Seychelles.
