US condemns call for its ban, describing it as a dictatorial attitude |05 August 2023
The United Seychelles Party has strongly condemned declarations made by Honourable Gervais Henrie, the secretary general of the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), the ruling party, calling for the ban of the United Seychelles (US), the main opposition party in the Seychelles.
In a press release issued yesterday, the President of the US, Dr Patrick Herminie, said the statement was made during the sitting of the National Assembly of Wednesday, August 2, 2023 while debating on the report of the Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Commission (TRNUC).
“He (Hon. Henrie) further stated that all politicians affiliated with the party (US) will be stripped of their constitutional right to participate in government that is to contest elections,” read the press release.
Dr Herminie noted that Hon. Henrie is also the deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles.
“The United Seychelles party strongly condemns these declarations which will de facto lead to one-partyism in the Seychelles. This dictatorial attitude has no place in our modern democracy as it goes against the principles of our Constitution. They are also detrimental to national unity and may provoke civil unrest and violence among our peace-loving people,” the statement said, adding they were “certainly not in the best interest of our country”.
“By copy of this press release, the United Seychelles (US) is appealing to international organisations that promote peace and democracy and to countries with diplomatic missions to Seychelles to intervene in order to prevent such an undemocratic proposition by the LDS from being implemented,” the press release concluded.
